BArich Hardware-IT'S been a busy week for us. Jess and I have been set a task to each design and style a bathroom with the winner being announced before Christmas. It's Ayden v Jess in the great bathroom challenge.

How hard is it to buy some knick-knacks and place them around the room? Bingo! First mistake. Apparently they are not called knick-knacks. If you're planning to remodel your bathroom here are our tips:

Budget

Whether it be a bathroom, kitchen or deck, the most asked question by our clients is, how much does a reno cost? It's a fair question as once you have been doing them for a while you sort of know a ball park figure. But before you get exited about your builder's estimate, just remember it is just that, an estimate until you sit down and work it all out it with them. It could be a lot more or a lot less depending on what finishes you are looking for.

Big cost items in a bathroom are fittings and materials. For a bathroom, I recommend getting your builders in for a quote and also to discuss design options. A good builder will help you out with looking outside of the box, especially when it comes to reconfiguring the space. If you are going to tackle it yourself, make sure your trades have all the proper insurances and qualifications. The last thing you want is for something to go wrong - leaking water can be disastrous and costly. Do it right the first time.

Design and style

When designing your bathroom it's also a good time to let your styling juices flow. If you have no idea on how to design your new bathroom, research is the best tool. After 10 seasons of The Block, there are at least 50 bathroom designs on the internet. You've also got Pinterest, which is a great option with thousand of pictures. Start printing out random shots that you like and glue them into a scrapbook or pin them on a board. We actually have our whole house design and random shots of things Blu Tacked to our wardrobe door.

Once you've decided on the style you'd like to take, measure the space and draw it to scale on paper. You can pick up a scale ruler from the newsagency, then every time you think of something, you can see if it fits. I make about 10 copies of the room space, and then start drawing in the layout, for example, the position of the toilet, shower, bath and vanity. I keep drawing different layouts until I find the one I think works best for the space.

Now the layout is done, the next biggest decision is tiles. I've never been allowed to make a decision like that before. It's always been up to Jess. There are millions of different types of tiles. Considering the bathrooms we are building are purely for show, I wanted to do something different.

I chose a tile set out that I liked but probably wouldn't put in our bathroom, as it would isolate some people and that is something you need to consider if you ever want to sell your home.

Jess, on the other hand, has gone for a marble look and dark chevron tile on the floor, which, of course, will look amazing and be to many people's taste. Your local tile shop will be able to assist you with your selection, but remember don't get talked into anything if you are not entirely sure. Just sleep on it. You can always make that decision tomorrow.
