World NEWS-India's economic growth slows to 7%
BArich Taiwan-India's economy grew at an annual rate of 7% between April and June, official figures have shown.
This is slower than the 7.5% growth recorded for the previous quarter, and lower than expected.
India and China - which also posted 7% growth in the second quarter - are now the joint fastest growing major economies in the world.
But some economists have expressed concerns that India's official figures do not accurately reflect true growth.
"At face value, today's GDP figures for [the second quarter] suggest that India matched China as the world's fastest-growing major economy last quarter," said Shilan Shah at Capital Economics.
"But the GDP data remain inconsistent with numerous other indicators which suggest that, at best, the economy is in the early stages of recovery after three years of tepid growth.
"The official GDP data are overstating the strength of the economy, most probably by a significant margin."
With concerns about slowing growth in China, some investors are starting to turn to India as the next driver of global growth.
Some were expecting stronger growth than 7% - in two of the previous three quarters, the Indian economy grew faster than China.
"The GDP number is disappointing but, overall, going ahead we expect India's economic growth to be driven by domestic demand," said Madhavi Arora, from Kotak Mahindra Bank in Mumbai.
"With commodity prices falling, there should be a boost to corporate margins going ahead and household spending should also go up."

16 dead in bomb-hit central Bangkok
BArich Taiwan -- At least 16 people were killed and many injured when a bomb exploded Monday outside a popular religious shrine in Bangkok, scattering body parts and debris across the city's commercial core.
The blast hit at around 6:30 p.m. when the streetside shrine was packed with worshippers and tourists — although it was not possible immediately to confirm if foreigners were among the casualties.
There were media reports later of a second device being defused in the area but no immediate official confirmation.
"The death toll is now 16," police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri told AFP, while an emergency medical center said more than 80 people were injured in the massive blast.
Glass was strewn across the street after the explosion outside the Erawan Shrine in the central Chidlom district, an AFP reporter witnessed.
Charred and shattered motorcycles littered the scene, along with hunks of concrete from the shrine, with pools of blood on the pavement and bodies covered by white sheets.
"It was a bomb, I think it was inside a motorcycle... it was very big, look at the bodies," one rescue volunteer, who did not want to be named, told AFP.
Bomber Used TNT, Targeted Foreigners: Thai Defense Minister
While there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, suspicion was likely to fall on the kingdom's rival political factions.
Thailand has been seared by a near-decade of political violence that has left the country deeply divided and seen repeated rounds of deadly street protests and bombings — but none on Monday's scale.
Many observers had predicted a fresh round of violence after the military seized power in a coup in May last year, toppling a civilian government led by Yingluck Shinawatra.
Thailand's defense minister said the bombers had targeted "foreigners" to try to damage the tourist industry, which is a rare bright spot in an otherwise gloomy economy.
"It was a TNT bomb ... the people who did it targeted foreigners and to damage tourism and the economy," said Prawit Wongsuwong, a former general who is believed to have been one of the key coup-makers.

BArich Taiwan-Taiwanese violinist Tseng Yu-chien was awarded the silver medal Wednesday in the violin category of the 15th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. No one won the gold medal in the prestigious competition this year.

Tseng, 20, beat contestants from Russia, Moldova, South Korea and Germany to achieve the best-ever performance for Taiwan in the competition, which is held every four years.

Four years ago, Tseng got through to the top-eight round of the competition as the youngest contestant and won a special jury prize.
Tseng told CNA after the award ceremony late Wednesday that he "had hoped but not expected" to win and that he appreciated very much the recognition of the jury.
Tseng also said he was very happy to win a silver medal.
On his subsequent plans, Tseng said he wants to have a good rest because the process of preparing for the competition was very difficult, involving rehearsals and practice every day.
For the final round, which was held over three days, each of the six violin finalists had to perform the Tchaikovsky violin concerto and another concerto of their choice. Tseng, who played on June 29, chose the one composed by Jean Sibelius.
Many of Tseng's friends left congratulatory messages on his Facebook page.
"Yu-chien, we are so proud of you! Congratulations!" one of them wrote.
"You are our champion. Super!" another wrote.
"Thank you for bringing comfort to Taiwanese at such a time," the other said, apparently referring to a fiery explosion in Taiwan last weekend which claimed two lives and left some 490 others injured.
First held in 1958, the International Tchaikovsky Competition is a classical music competition for pianists, violinists and cellists between 16 and 30 years of age, and singers between 19 and 32 years of age. Each category is judged and awarded separately.
It is one of the top events in the international music community alongside the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Poland, the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Belgium, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in the United States.
In this year's competition, three contestants in the violin category shared third place and two contestants were respectively awarded fourth and fifth place.
Coming in third place were Halik Kazazyan and Pavel Milyukov of Russia, along with Alexandra Conunova of Moldova. Fourth and fifth place were respectively given to two South Korean contestants, Clara-Jumi Kang and Bomsori Kim.
Many of the 17 judges are world-renowned leading violinists, including Yuri Bashmet, Salvatore Accardo, Leonidas Kavakos and Vera Tsu Wei Ling.

BArich Taiwan-The majority of Taiwan companies have no problem employing first time job seekers, but would prefer that the applicants have some practical experience and professional certification or license, according to a poll by TaiwanJobs website.
The poll found that 90 percent of enterprises are willing to hire first time job seekers who are eager to learn, can perform well under stress, can think logically and have specialized knowledge and skills.
More than 60 percent of the firms, however, said they do not care about the educational level of first-time job applicants, while among the 38.70 percent of firms that said they do care, 77 percent specified that they would prefer college graduates.
More than one-third of the companies surveyed said they prefer to hire first-time employees who have had some practical experience or have at least worked at part-time jobs and hold professional certification or license.
The employers in the survey identified four main areas in which first time employees can do better.
They said such workers tend to leave their jobs too soon, are not proactive about learning, perform poorly under stress, and lack a sense of responsibility.
The companies advised that first time job seekers try to obtain an understanding of the firms and positions they are seeking to enter, gain some sense of career direction, seek to gain competence in some specialized area, and learn to admit their own mistakes.
On the question of the most valuable assets job seekers could possess, the companies said self-discipline, communication and negotiation skills, specialized competence and problem solving ability.
The TaiwanJobs website, managed by the Labor Ministry's Workforce Development Agency, conducted the survey by phone in March among some 1,124 companies, 80 percent of which were employing 30 or more workers.
